Leaders from the United States, Mexico and Canada gathered in Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña to advance Future I-27 from designation to delivery. Discussions highlighted dedicated federal funding, coordinated project development and stronger international connections, including the Ciudad Acuña–Torreón agreement and the “57 to 27” strategy.
The Del Rio–Acuña gateway recorded more than 93,000 commercial truck crossings and over $6 billion in two-way trade during the 12 months ending July 2026. Presentations at the 2026 Ports-to-Plains Alliance Annual Conference connected that growth with the potential of Future I-27 to improve freight mobility, strengthen manufacturing supply chains and expand economic opportunity. REMI modeling also highlighted the construction and long-term economic benefits of improved Interstate access.
TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams told the 2026 Ports-to-Plains Alliance Annual Conference that Future I-27 is moving from designation to delivery. He outlined priorities for completing funded projects, developing future improvements, extending Interstate designation and preserving the corridor for growth. Williams also emphasized transportation technology, predictable funding and partnerships as essential to advancing the corridor.
The Ports-to-Plains Alliance is advancing its “57 to 27” strategy to connect Mexico’s Highway 57 with Future Interstate 27 and a broader trade corridor reaching Canada. Through the ASREC framework, the initiative promotes secure trade gateways, alternative freight routes and stronger connections among manufacturing, agriculture and energy markets. The strategy also highlights Puerto Verde’s planned international crossing and the infrastructure partnerships needed to move the corridor from designation to delivery.
