The Congressionally Authorized Future Interstate Coalition (CAFI) supports a dedicated federal formula program to complete congressionally designated Future Interstate corridors. These corridors strengthen freight movement, safety, national defense, rural connectivity, and access to domestic and international markets.

Administration’s Priorities
On July 22, 2026, USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the U.S. Senate Committees of Jurisdiction for Transportation Reauthorization. Duffy stated: “I am pleased to submit these proposals for surface transportation reauthorization to advance the President’s vision for a bold transportation future.”
Below matches a key priority of CAFI and its members.
“Expanding and Modernizing Infrastructure: Congress should authorize a new competitive grant program targeted at expediting the completion and expansion of the Interstate system, mitigating nationally significant freight bottlenecks at highway interchanges, and deploying critical digital infrastructure and transportation technology at scale. The Administration’s objective is to launch completion of the Interstate Highway System, including the start of construction for unbuilt, congressionally designated highways. This is key for ensuring that the U.S. remains economically dominant for the next century, as many of the highways of today were built during the Cold War with no subsequent maintenance of pace in improvement in the ensuing decades.”
We now have an important opportunity to build on the Secretary’s stated priority and demonstrate broad, grassroots support for completing America’s Interstate system.
We are asking each coalition member, partner organization, and representatives of congressionally designated Interstate corridors to send a letter to Secretary Duffy expressing support for this priority and encouraging the Department to continue advancing Interstate completion as part of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization process. Hearing directly from stakeholders across the country will reinforce the significant economic, mobility, and freight benefits these investments provide to local communities and the national transportation network.
If you are willing to take this effort one step further, we also encourage you to engage your local chamber(s) of commerce. A letter of support from the business community highlighting the economic development, freight movement, workforce, and competitiveness benefits of completing the Interstate system would further strengthen this message.
