Brenda Gunter was elected San Angelo’s mayor in May 2017 and chosen by the City Council to represent San Angelo on the board. She owns and operates Miss Hattie’s Restaurant, a popular downtown eatery in an historic building. She also is President of Downtown San Angelo.

A graduate of Kansas State University, Gunter had a long and successful career in the fashion industry in Dallas and New York, working for high-profile brands such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Calvin Klein. She has also has a robust resume of civic involvement. Gunter is the longtime board president of Downtown San Angelo, Inc., and a member of the boards of the San Angelo Area Foundation, Angelo State University’s College of Business and the Texas Historical Foundation. She has served as president of the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone board in San Angelo and twice as chairwoman of the Texas Downtown Association/Main Street convention. She chaired the annual campaign of the United Way of the Concho Valley in 2011. The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce honored her as the Citizen of the Year in 2010. She was awarded the Jefferson award in 2011 for her voluntary work.

Gunter has championed the redevelopment of San Angelo’s historic downtown, which today enjoys a bustling nightlife that complements ever-increasing business, retail, residential and recreational offerings. As chairwoman of Downtown San Angelo’s Design Committee, she authored a 42-page walking tour brochure. As chair of the organization’s Promotions Committee, she spearheaded San Angelo’s SheepSpectacular, which celebrated the community’s history and heritage in the sheep industry. As part of that effort, more than 50 decorative fiberglass sheep statuettes have been placed around San Angelo.
